Landfill tax: how the rate has changed

Driving, flying and the environment. Landfill tax started in October 1996 to push councils and businesses towards recycling. Ordinary waste pays the standard rate, and inert waste such as soil and rubble pays the lower rate. Scotland and Wales run their own landfill taxes, so these are the rates for England and Northern Ireland.
