Gambling duties: how the rate has changed

Drink, tobacco, gambling and vaping. Gambling duties are paid by the firms, not the player, and are charged on the firm's profit from the game or bet. Online casino games, betting and betting shops each have their own duty.

Worth knowing

• Bingo duty was abolished on 1 April 2026.
• Machine games duty and the duty on betting shops and casinos did not change at the Autumn Budget 2025.
• General betting duty was charged on stakes before October 2001, so it is not comparable with the profits-based tax that followed.
