Air passenger duty: how the rate has changed
Driving, flying and the environment. Air passenger duty is charged per passenger on flights leaving the UK. The rate depends on how far the flight goes and whether the ticket is in the lowest class of travel or a higher one. Short-haul means the nearest countries, such as Europe, and long-haul means the next band, such as the United States.
Worth knowing
- From 1994 to 2001 one rate covered all classes. The rate for the lowest class was added in April 2001.
- The distance bands changed over the years, so long-haul means the first band beyond Europe. Children under 16 in the lowest class have not paid since March 2016.
- Domestic flights and private jets have their own rates, which are not shown.
